How Densely Should You Plant Strawberries? What’s the Best Spacing?

Well, on one hand, you’d want to plant strawberries 🍓 as densely as possible in hopes of a high yield. On the other hand, there’s a sensible limit to the number of plants per unit area, and excessive crowding will cause individual plants to compete with each other for water and nutrients, and the maturing fruits, lacking sufficient sunlight ☀️, will be smaller and not as sweet as they could be. Moreover, due to the increased humidity in overly dense plantings, conditions become favorable for various fungal infections, especially gray mold.

Based on my many years of experience 🧐, I do not recommend planting more densely than 6 plants per 1 m^2, and for vigorously growing varieties even less, i.e., a maximum of 5 pieces per 1 m^2. Hence, I can suggest spacing such as 35cmx60cm or 25cmx70cm or even 20cmx80cm. Let’s not forget that in subsequent years of cultivation, despite removing emerging runners, some part of the young plants🌱 will manage to root, and thus the density of plants, whether we want it or not, will increase. Moreover, it’s worth remembering that wide paths between rows will facilitate maintenance work on our “plantation” – weeding, possible spraying, and also fruit picking (at least there will be somewhere to put the basket😀).
