How to Increase Strawberry Yields? Remove the Runners!

This is one of the key care treatments in strawberry cultivation. If we neglected it, our strawberries would quickly become too dense and nothing good would come of it. Why?🤔

* Excessive plant density🌱 is not conducive to proper ventilation, which increases the humidity of the air inside the plant stand and the risk of fungal infections, especially gray mold.
* Too many plants per unit area cause individual plants to compete with each other for water and light. The result is that the fruits are smaller and, deprived of access to the sun, become less sweet.🍓

Runners are best removed before the seedlings start to take root. The sooner the better. The strawberry, thanks to its “intelligence”, knows that if it cannot reproduce vegetatively (we prevent it from doing so by removing the runners, it must do so generatively, i.e. bloom and bear fruit (and seeds). In a word, early removal of runners stimulates strawberry plants to generate more flower buds for the next year and, consequently, increases the yield. Removing runners is not difficult. All you need is a desire and a sharp knife, maybe pruning shears 😉
