Is It Worth Spending Money on Nursery Strawberry Plants? How Are They Better Than Free Ones From Your Father-in-Law?

Oh, it’s worth it! 😊 Seedlings from a nursery and those ‘from the father-in-law’ might look the same at a glance. The truth usually comes out after some time, often when we start harvesting. Believe an old practitioner – you will never, ever succeed in strawberry cultivation by planting a plantation with ‘crap’. Free seedlings ‘from the father-in-law’ or ‘from the brother-in-law’, especially from a plantation that’s been around for several years, are just an illusory saving. 😀

After all, regardless of where the seedlings 🌱 come from, all other costs associated with establishing the plantation have to be incurred anyway (preparing the site – dealing with so-called permanent weed infestation, manure, digging the soil, possibly black agricultural fabric, planting, watering, white fabric for frost protection, etc. etc.).

We live in a free country, and no one will forbid us from planting non-qualified strawberry 🍓 seedlings, but let’s not be surprised later that the plants grow poorly, that already in the first year of cultivation they are stunted (most likely the work of the mite), deformed (here come the nematodes), discolored (viruses) or that the whole plants wilt and die (most probably red root rot of strawberries – Phytophtora cactorum). 🙂
