Millipedes and Armadillos in the Garden – How to Deal with Them

Centipedes and millipedes play an important role in the ecosystem.

Centipedes, especially the smaller species, help in the decomposition of organic matter and can contribute to the control of other pest populations. Millipedes, on the other hand, primarily feed on decaying plant matter and fungi, which also plays a significant role in soil formation processes.🧐
Therefore, instead of completely eliminating these insects, I recommend seeking a balance and methods to limit their population to a level that does not harm crops, while allowing them to fulfill their natural role in the garden environment.🌱

Some centipede species may damage young garden plants, seedlings, roots, and even fruits lying on the ground, such as our beloved strawberries. They can bite and feed on the soft tissues of various plants, which can lead to their damage or even death.

The presence of centipedes and millipedes in the garden may be perceived by some as unsightly and unpleasant, especially since these insects are often associated with dirt and moisture.🙂 Millipedes, in particular, often appear in places with high humidity. Their presence may signal drainage problems or excessive irrigation in the garden.

In any case, if the above problem occurs, I recommend reducing moisture in the areas where these “uninvited guests” are found and removing their shelters (under stones, boards, leaves, and other objects lying on the ground) as well as regular garden cleaning. All these actions can limit problems associated with the presence of centipedes and millipedes.

One thing is certain: it is not worth fighting centipedes and millipedes with insecticides.💧
