Growing alpine strawberries is not difficult, and considering their undeniable taste and health benefits, it’s worth allocating a few square meters for them in every garden, no matter how small. Children and grandchildren will squeal with joy. 😁
Alpine strawberries will grow and bear fruit well in any soil with good gardening culture, i.e., not weedy, e.g., with couch grass, not overly waterlogged, rich in humus, nutritious, etc. Alpine strawberries root very shallowly (max. 20 cm), so it’s important to remember not to plant them in very light soils (deep sands, gravels) as well as in heavy clay soils – there, it will always be difficult to maintain the proper moisture and air conditions. The soil pH should be slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5). A few weeks before planting alpine strawberries, it’s worth sprinkling a bit of compost, or old, well-rotted manure.🙂
Alpine strawberries, just like garden strawberries, love the sun ☀️, however, a light partial shade won’t harm them.
Similar to garden strawberries, they can be planted practically throughout the growing season. To establish a “plantation,” it’s easiest to use ready, potted seedlings (at our farm, you can purchase strongly rooted alpine strawberry seedlings in five varieties: www.strawberry-plants.ie).👈🍓
Before planting alpine strawberries, it’s worth marking out a bed in the garden, e.g., 1.2 m wide. On such a bed, we can plant, for example, 3 rows of alpine strawberries, with one seedling every 15-20 cm in the row. We do not recommend denser planting, as excessive denseness of alpine strawberries will not increase our yield. On the contrary, alpine strawberries growing too densely will bear smaller and less sweet fruits (due to the lack of sufficient sunlight), and also, due to the significantly more difficult ventilation of the plant stand, the risk of fungal infections will increase. .
Alpine strawberry is a perennial plant, which does not mean – eternal. During the first 2 years of cultivation, one can expect decent yields🌱 (together in one season even 1.5 kg/1m2), in subsequent years their productivity decreases. Therefore, it’s worth replacing our “plantation” every 3 years, planting new seedlings in a different place.
