CLIMATIC AND SOIL REQUIREMENTS OF STRAWBERRIES

For strawberries, we should look for a place with good sunlight and sheltered from strong and frosty winds. In particular, we should avoid so-called frost pockets, e.g. drainless basins where cold air collects and cannot flow away to places even lower down.

As far as soil requirements are concerned, strawberries are not particularly fussy. They will grow and bear fruit well on most soils, provided that they are not too heavy, permeable and inthe so-called good horticultural culture (proper structure, no permanent weeds).

We should avoid dry sandy soils, as well as soils that are very sandy, not airy or waterlogged. The reaction of the soil should be slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5). In the case of pH<5,5 it will be advisable to liming the soil.
